Pleomorphic Adenoma and Its Symptoms along with Treatment Procedure

 

Pleomorphic adenoma is a common benign salivary gland neoplasm that is characterized by neoplastic proliferation of parenchymatous glandular cells along with myoepithelial components – having a malignant potentiality. There are different symptoms. The most common symptom of this tumor is development of a lump or swelling on, in or near your neck, jaw and mouth. Patient may also feel numbness and muscle weakness in part of your face along with continuous pain your salivary gland.

As far as etiology of pleomorphic adenoma is concerned, it is unknown and the incidence of this tumor often found increasing 15-20 years after exposure of radiation. According to researches, Simian Virus may play a causative role in the development of pleomorphic adenoma.  It is most common benign salivary gland neoplasm – representing approx 45-75% of all salivary gland tumors.

Surgery is the treatment procedure for Pleomorphic adenoma. There is risk of damaging the nerve and cause a facial paresis. Radiation therapy is also used that is also an effective adjuvant therapy.
