What Is A Parotid Tumor, And How Can It Affect The Body?

The mouth is an important part of the human body as we intake food from it, and salivary glands help break the food into small particles and make it easier for digestion. Many salivary glands are present in the lips, cheeks, mouth, and throat. But sometimes, due to an unhealthy lifestyle or any other reason, tumors happen in the parotid gland, which causes many issues. However, the parotid tumor is not that serious and can be cured easily. Parotid tumors are the abnormal growth of cells in the salivary glands. Parotid glands are present in front of the ear and near the neck.

What are the symptoms of a parotid tumor?

There will be continuous swelling in the face, but they are not painful.

Sometimes there will be numbness in the swelling area.

There will be several sensations several times; one will experience a burning sensation of prickling.

Sometimes if the tumors aren't treated, it can lead to hearing loss.

What is the diagnosis for this?

Physical exam – first, the doctor will examine your face and jaw to know the area where swelling is happening.

Biopsy – biopsy is an examination through which a needle is inserted through the skin to the gland which is affected and draws out samples that go for testing to know the condition of the tumor and would recommend the next procedure.

Imaging tests – the doctor would do an imaging test to know the exact position of the tumor and the size of the tumor. They will also examine if the parotid gland is cancerous or not. If they are cancerous, there will be several more tests like ultrasound, MRI to detect the spread of the cancerous cells.

The parotid tumor usually can be removed by surgery, and they are not that dangerous to the health once they get treated in time.
